Myth: Non-exclusive Flight Attendant Unions ride on the AFA’s coattails.
Busted: AFA is no longer an exclusive Flight Attendant union, and they have failed to produce for their members.
AFA started out as a division of ALPA and is now is a very small division of the Communication Workers of America.
It is misleading for the AFA-CWA to profess they are an independent union. The truth is, AFA was too weak to survive as a stand-alone union.
More important is what the IAM and other “non-exclusive” Flight Attendant unions have achieved for Flight Attendants.
The two best Flight Attendant agreements in the industry (IAM-Continental and Transport Workers Union-Southwest) were negotiated by large unions that represent airline workers in many various classifications. The worst Flight Attendant agreements in the industry were negotiated by the AFA-CWA.
The contracts the IAM has produced for Flight Attendants proves the IAM has raised the bar for all Flight Attendants, in spite of AFA-CWA’s failures at the bargaining table.
