Combined Agreement

Myth: The IAM will impose the Continental Flight Attendant contract on the combined United/Continental group.

Busted: Not true.

The IAM-Continental contract has industry-leading compensation and flexibility, providing a better quality of life for Flight Attendants. However, the IAM knows that there are portions of the United Airlines contract that are beneficial to Flight Attendants. The best of both contracts will be present in the first combined agreement negotiated by the IAM for Flight Attendants at the merged United.

The IAM will conduct surveys and solicit contract proposals from the combined Flight Attendant group before engaging in transition negotiations. Each pre-merger Continental and United domestic and international base will be represented on the IAM’s bargaining team.

IAM Files for Mediation in Continental Flight Attendant Talks

The IAM today announced it has filed for federal mediation in its year-long negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement for 9,500 Flight Attendants at Continental Airlines, a subsidiary of United Continental Holdings, Inc.

On October 27, 2010, Continental Flight Attendants rejected a tentative interim agreement that provided wage increases and job guarantees through Continental’s merger and integration with United Airlines. Negotiations began in December 2010, before Continental’s merger with United was announced.

“Continental has been unwilling to restore all the sacrifices Flight Attendants made to help the carrier avoid bankruptcy and merge with United,” said Sheila Hammond, a Continental Flight Attendant and IAM negotiating committee member.

Contract 2010 Question & Answers

Q. Why weren't there any improvements to sick leave?
A. The committee had to make tough decisions on economic issues. The committee was very passionate about both sick leave accrual and the use of sick leave bank. Both lowering the 500 hour requirement for full line protection and raising the cap on the number of hours that could be protected were on the table to the end. The committee gave preference to wage increase when assessing the choices we had to make. Be assured that sick leave remains high on the list of improvements that the committee will bring to the table in the Transition Agreement...

Contract 2010: A Brief History

During the summer of 2009, the IAM solicited contract proposals from the membership for the impending contract negotiations. We received an unprecedented number of over 20,000 Flight Attendant proposals. A proposal Screening Committee, comprised of elected Flight Attendant Local Lodge officers, met in Kansas City, MO to review each individual proposal.
